German Chub Sampler – Spreadable (Streichwurst)
Four soft, spreadable German classics, each with its own story.
Walk into any German butcher shop and you'll find a long case of Wurst, each one tied to a region, a tradition, or a time of day. Streichwurst, or spreadable sausage, is the heart of the Abendbrot table: spread thick on dark bread or a warm pretzel and passed around with pickles and onion. We've gathered four favorites into one sampler so you can taste your way across Germany.
What's Inside
- Teawurst: A finely ground, lightly smoked spreadable sausage from the Pomeranian coast. Its name comes from being served at afternoon tea, spread on bread or crackers. Creamy, smoky and gently tangy.
- Fine Liverwurst: The heart of German Abendbrot. Silky and mild, it's the one German grandmothers keep in the fridge for an easy supper.
- Coarse Liverwurst: The rustic, country-style cousin of fine liverwurst, with more texture and a hearty, savory bite.
- Leberwurst Pfälzer: A liver sausage in the style of the Palatinate (Pfalz), the wine country of southwest Germany. Rich and rustic, it's at home next to a glass of Riesling.
How to Enjoy
Slice fresh farmers bread or warm a few soft pretzels. Cut open each chub and spread generously, then top with sliced onion, pickles or a few radishes. Taste them side by side and find your family's favorite.
